Y&R Emmy Countdown #2: Phyllis Summers Always Comes Out on Top
We’re down to #2 in the Young & the Restless Daytime Emmy countdown, & I’m not even going to pretend to be neutral on this one. Phyllis Summers, played by Michelle Stafford, is up for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, & I will defend this woman even when it gets tough.
Totally Bad Ass, Every Single Time
I don’t agree with every single thing Phyllis does. Nobody does. She schemes, she blows things up & she burns bridges she just finished building. Still, she comes out of it every time. Knock her down & she’s back the next week with a new plan, a new grudge & a better outfit.
That’s not luck. That’s 32 years of Stafford turning a messy woman into someone you can’t stop rooting for. She first walked into Genoa City in October 1994 for what was supposed to be a short-term role. The show kept her. Smart move.
She’s Done This Before
Stafford already has 3 Daytime Emmys: Supporting Actress in 1997, then Lead Actress in 2004 & again in 2024. A win Friday would make it 4.
She’s also the only Y&R actress in the category. Her competition is Stacy Haiduk (Kristen, Days of Our Lives), Heather Tom (Katie, The Bold & the Beautiful), plus Karla Mosley (Dani) & Tamara Tunie (Anita) from Beyond the Gates.

New Writers, Here’s Your Assignment
Young & the Restless gets new head writers in November, & my first request: put Phyllis back where she belongs, running the Grand Phoenix. Phyllis with a hotel to run was Phyllis at her best. She was a boss, a hostess & a schemer all under one roof.
The GCAC is a great start. Now give her the keys to the Grand Phoenix & watch what happens.
My Pick? Phyllis, Obviously
If this category were judged on survival skills alone, Phyllis would have retired the trophy years ago. Love her or hate her, you can’t look away when she’s on screen, & that’s exactly what an Emmy is supposed to reward.
Tomorrow, #1: Traci Abbott, played by Beth Maitland, up for Supporting Actress.
Does Phyllis grab Emmy #4 on Friday, or does someone finally knock her down? It’s not my first day watching Y&R & it isn’t yours either. What’s your take?
