Genoa City Needs More Than One Hotel & One Motel
Right now, everyone in this town is funneling through the same handful of locations. The GCAC is clearly at capacity, & somehow the only overflow option is a sketchy Riverbank Motel. Matt Clark (Roger Howarth) & Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) have been spending time there, & so have Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) & Victoria Newman (Amelia Heinle), which tells you everything about how limited the accommodation options currently are in Genoa City. A town with this much money, scheming, & affairs happening on a weekly basis needs more than one place for people to check into. When two completely unrelated storylines are both relying on the same shady motel for their secret rendezvous, that’s not a coincidence; that’s a sign the show has painted itself into a corner with its own sets.
Phyllis Summers Was Built for This
Phyllis has been through a lot of iterations on this show, but running The Grand Phoenix might have been her best era. She had ambition, she had a purpose beyond scheming against whoever wronged her that week, & she had a physical space that was entirely hers. Watching Phyllis run a hotel gave her storylines somewhere to live that weren’t just creating her own extreme drama out of boredom & whatever version of unemployment she has been in.
She got to be a boss, a hostess, & a schemer all under one roof, & that combination worked because it gave her agency outside of whoever she was currently fighting with. If the new writers want to give her something meaningful again, rebooting the Grand Phoenix & putting Phyllis Summers back to her post is by far one of the easiest actions to make Genoa City make some sense again on Y&R. Phyllis has already proven she can run it; she’s already got the ambition for it, & honestly, we know she still has the outfits for it too.

Don’t Forget About The Woman in the Green Dress
…& while we’re at it, where is Crystal (Krystal Mosley)? Fans have missed The Woman in the Green Dress for a long time now.
She was a fixture of the hotel’s lobby, quietly working in the background while all the actual drama unfolded around her. She didn’t need dialogue to be memorable, she just needed to exist in that space, & somehow that was enough to make people ask about her by name for years. There’s something genuinely charming about a background character earning that level of fan devotion without a single storyline of her own. Bringing back the Grand Phoenix without bringing her back too would be a missed opportunity, & frankly, a little insulting to everyone who’s been asking about her for this long.
The Launch Parties, the Lobby, & the Spa
The Grand Phoenix wasn’t just a building; it was a whole ecosystem of story potential. The launch parties alone gave the show built-in reasons for big cast gatherings & inevitable drama, since nothing brings out bad behavior in Genoa City quite like an open bar & a guest list full of exes. The lobby was basically its own character, a place where people could run into exes, rivals, & secrets all in one central location, no contrived coincidence required. Finally, don’t forget the spa, which gave the show a built-in excuse for Genoa City residents to have an intimate, low-stakes conversation that could turn into something bigger, all while wrapped in bathrobes instead of business attire. Losing all of that in one sale was a real loss for the show’s storytelling toolbox, & it’s the kind of loss that’s easy to overlook until you realize how often the show is scrambling for a fresh location now.
A Fresh Start Deserves a Fresh Setting
New writers starting in November means new storylines, new pairings, & new conflicts. All of that needs somewhere to happen. Reopening The Grand Phoenix, ideally with Phyllis back at the helm & Crystal back in her green dress, gives the new regime an instant, built-in setting with history already baked in. It’s not a hard sell. It’s sitting right there, vacant, waiting for someone to finally use it.
New writers, consider this your official #1 to-do list item: bring back the Grand Phoenix.
